In 2007 I found myself with a few weeks to kill when my wife was visiting family in Sweden.

I'd always been fascinated with China and dearly wanted to a do a tour. So I jumped online, booked a tour and away I went for an 18 day trip around this fascinating country.

Whilst it was a terrific tour, I couldn't help thinking "Mmmmm, this part can be a done a little better....."

Probably my best example of that was some of the un-smooth traveling - doing one overnight train trip in a hardback chair in cold conditions is okay. Two nights of that is pushing the friendship.

But 5 cold, hard nights on a train traveling between cities isn't an ideal experience - what that does is lessen the experience of the next day as you're fighting to stay awake, instead of enjoying yourself.

And no one wants to be herded into shops just so the tour guide can supplement his income with commissions.

It's pretty simple stuff - and it's that attention to those details that makes the difference.

I wanted to see the real China. With great tour leaders who speak great English, and who are motivated to work hard to give you a great experience. And I wanted to do it in comfort so that I could make the most of each day.

So what I did was get together with best people I know and we mapped out the sort of trip that I would want to take.

• It's a trip in relative comfort,
• inexpensive, and
• takes in the absolute best China has to offer.
